12th International Summer University

12th International Summer University on "Mobile Integrated Systems for Biomonitoring" from August 5 th  - 18 th 2019 at the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences Braunschweig/Wolfenbüttel, Germany

14 participants took part in the 12th International Summer University on "Mobile Integrated Systems for Biomonitoring" from August 5 th  - 18 th, 2019 at the Ostfalia University of Applied Sciences - University of Applied Sciences Braunschweig/Wolfenbüttel, the two faculties of Supply Engineering and Computer Science. A second part of the summer university will follow on the same topic at the partner university University of Wisconsin - Parkside (UWP), Kenosha in Wisconsin/USA in August 2020. This year's ISU was dedicated to harmful algae blooms (HAB) in freshwater lakes dominated by Cyanobacteria in late summer and the accompanying toxins. The topic is gaining relevance as temperatures are on the rise worldwide and even in the region of northern Germany. Prof. Gerndt (Faculty Computer Sciences) taught on the transfer of data sets from automated sampling, Dr. Sander (Faculty Supply Engineering) taught on the subject of lake management and Prof. Preuss from the University of Wisconsin-Parkside taught in the area of biosciences. Together they supervise the accredited course from 2 x 2 weeks 2019 to 2020 for a mixed group of American and German students.

The ISU covers technical aspects of environmental monitoring and water management, including the practical example of the Lake Stadtgraben in Wolfenbüttel, a highly frequented recreational area within city limits. Samples were taken under field conditions to be evaluated in laboratory sessions later as an aid for the projects assigned to student groups throughout the course. Intercultural competence was part of the course as well, including excursions within the Wolfebüttel region and to Wolfsburg and Berlin or the after work chill out at the Wolfenbüttel NDR Open Air Festival on the university campus. Participants were also delighted to receive a reception by Mayor Thomas Pink as part of the lively Sisterhood program between the twin cities Wolfenbüttel and Kenosha, Wisconsin, USA. The project work in international and interdisciplinary mixed teams was received equally well by all participants, so that a continuation of the course offer was agreed on in the years to come.
