The DIN SPEC 1206 " Recommendation for the Terminology and Characterization of Biopolymers and Bioplastics" names the term " biopolymer" as polymers of biological substances obtained from living organisms and their residues. This biomass is considered a renewable resource. A renewable resource is regenerated by natural processes at a rate comparable to its degradation rate. The carbon content of such a polymer is derived from the so-called short-term carbon cycle (expected time frame: 1 year to 10 years). In the long-term carbon cycle, the expected time frame for the conversion of biomass into oil, gas and coal is < 10 6 years.

The branch portal is operated in cooperation with the Franz Patatat Centre and has been providing information on the advantages and possibilities of the use of bioplastics since 2005, offering the sector a source of competent technical know-how and a professional platform for the presentation of their companies, products and services.
