Das Spektrum der Konferenz war und ist von kaum zu überbietender Aktualität, was an den Themen wie z.B. Trade, Investment, Brexit, Cyber Security, Rechtstaatlichkeit, Migration aus Kuba und Venezuela, Legalisierung von Cannabis, BEPS  sowie den SDGs abzulesen ist. Im ersten Panel zu Brexit and Trade & Development äußerte sich Prof. Dr. Achim Rogmann LLM. zum Thema: "CARICOM-EU Trade Law as a Tool for Development?“. Hannes Prochno LL.M. hielt einen vielbeachteten Vortrag zu dem Thema "Bulding a digital anchor: A legal perspective on how to improve electronic data exchange in maritime trade“. Im zweiten Panel zum Themengebiet Investment and Environmental Issues referierte Ass. iur. Claudia Kurkin in ihrem Vortrag zum Thema "EU and the CARICOM: Current Challenges and potential solutions in the energy and investment sector”, der ebenfalls auf positive Resonanz stieß.

Am zweiten Konferenztag beleuchtete Prof. Dr. Winfried Huck die Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in einem Vortrag zum Thema „The SDGs and its impact on ACP, CARICOM and the new European Consensus on Development - soft law on its way through the legal order". Im Anschluss referierte Prof. Dr. Fabian Stancke im dritten Panel SDGs & International Treaty Issues zu "State Backed Monopolies and their impact on trade, trade policy and SDGs”. Schließlich berichtete Prof. Dr. Till Zech LLM. im Panel Migration, Tax, Finance, World Trade & CARICOM zum Thema „Caribbean tax havens in danger under BEPS“.

Die Inhalte der Konferenz wurden mitverfolgt u.a. von H.E. Aad Biesebroek (Botschafter und Leiter der EU-Delegation in Trinidad and Tobago), der in seiner Eröffnungsrede ausführte, dass die Konferenz im genau richtigen Moment käme, und zwar aus drei verschiedenen Gründen: erstens wegen des BREXITs und seinen Auswirkungen auf die angloamerikanische Karibik mit engen Beziehungen seit der Kolonialzeit zu Großbritannien, zweitens wegen des Europäischen Politischen Abkommens (EPA) zwischen der EU und CARIFORUM und drittens wegen der im Oktober in New York beginnenden Neuverhandlung eines der größten Abkommen, das die EU jemals ausgehandelt hat, dem  EU-ACP - Abkommen mit afrikanischen, karibischen und pazifischen Staaten ("Cotonou-Agreement“). Ein Grußwort sprach auch der Botschafter des Vereinigten Königreichs High Commissioner H.E. Tim Stew, der die Konferenz ebenfalls mitverfolgte. Das Justizministerium von Trinidad und Tobago war vertreten, um die Beiträge für eine spätere Auswertung durch die Regierung zu dokumentieren. Die Regierung von Trinidad und Tobago verfolgt derzeit das Ziel, Gesetzesvorhaben im Sinne der Nachhaltigkeit und der internationalen Zusammenarbeit auszugestalten. Zudem waren diverse Pressevertreter zugegen. Die Konferenz wurde vollständig aufgezeichnet.

Die Tagungsbeiträge werden gesammelt und nach derzeitigem Planungsstand voraussichtlich im August 2019 in einem vom Verlag Routledge herausgegebenen Tagungsband in Zusammenarbeit mit dem neuen Kooperationspartner der BELS gLAWcal - Global Law Initiatives for Sustainable Development Routledge Book Series – Transnational Law and Governance erscheinen.

Three faculties jointly organize international congress in the Caribbean. Ambassador of the EU: EU-CARICOM Law Conference 2018 in Trinidad and Tobago comes at just the right moment. BELS-Delegation sets new trends

On the initiative of Alicia Elias-Roberts (Deputy Dean of the Law Faculty of the University of West Indies, Trinidad and Tobago (UWI)), Prof. Dr. Winfried Huck (Dean of the Brunswick European Law School (BELS) and Prof. Dr. Stephen Hardy (Dean of the Coventry Law School), academics from the Caribbean, USA, Great Britain and Germany participated in the co-organized EU-CARICOM Law Conference 2018 on “Present and Future Challenges” in Port of Spain/ Trinidad from 26 ^th to 27 ^th September 2018.

The spectrum of the conference was and is hardly to surpassing topicality, which is due to the topics such as Trade, Investment, Brexit, Cyber Security, Rule of Law, Migration from Cuba and Venezuela, legalization of Cannabis, BEPS and the SDGs. In the first panel on Brexit and Trade & Development, Prof. Dr. Achim Rogmann LL.M. on “CARICOM-EU Trade Law as a Tool for Development?”. In the first panel on Brexit and Trade & Development, Prof. Dr. Achim Rogmann LL.M. spoke about: “CARICOM-EU Trade Law as a Tool for Development?”. Hannes Prochno LL.M. gave a much-discussed lecture on “Building a digital anchor: A legal perspective on how to improve electronic data exchange in maritime trade”. In the second panel on Investment and Environmental Issues,  Ass. iur. Claudia Kurkin spoke in her lecture on the subject “EU and the CARICOM: current challenges and potential solutions in the energy and investment sector”, which also met with a positive response.     

On the second day of the conference, Prof. Dr. Winfried Huck highlighted the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in a lecture about “The SDGs and its impact on ACP, CARICOM and the new European Consensus on Development- soft law on its way through the legal order”. Afterwards, Prof. Dr. Fabian Stancke spoke in the third panel “SDGs & International Treaty Issues” on “State Backed Monopolies and their impact on trade, trade policy and SDGs”. Finally, Prof. Dr. Till Zech, LL.M. reported in the panel Migration, Tax, Finance, World Trade & CARICOM on the subject of “Caribbean tax havens in danger under BEPS”.

The conference contributions will be collected and, according to the current state of planning, are expected to be published in August 2019 in a conference book published by Routledge in cooperation with the new cooperation partner of BELS gLAWcal-Global Law Initiatives for Sustainable Development Routledge Book Series - Transnational Law and Governance.
